The snow cover products generated and delivered in the project are based on optical and active (radar, SAR) and passive microwave (MW) satellite imagery. The snow cover products are based on single sensor data inputs, as well as on dual or multi-sensor algorithms. The project partners have been working on basic principles of optical and radar wave interactions with snow and ice since many years, and made important contributions to innovative snow retrieval methods. The project consortium stands internationally at the leading edge of this development.
CryoLand provides the following snow products for the Pan-European area:
- Daily Fractional Snow Covered Area over Pan-Europe from Optical satellite data
- Daily Uncertainty Estimation (Root Mean Square Error) per pixel for the pan-European Fractional Snow Cover product
- Daily Snow Water Equivalent over Pan-Europe from Microwave data
The following products are derived from the pan-European snow products:
- Daily aggregated pan-European Fractional Snow Cover using the most recent cloud free information per pixel of the past 10 days (provided as VIEWING service only)
- Daily updated 10 days average of the Standardized Snow Pack Indicator derived from the pan-European Snow Water Equivalent product
- Daily updated 30 days average of the Standardized Snow Pack Indicator derived from the pan-European Snow Water Equivalent product
Additionally, the following snow products are provided for reduced coverages, but with higher spatial resolution:
- Daily Fractional Snow Covered Area over the Alps from Optical satellite data
- Daily Fractional Snow Covered Area over Baltic region from Optical satellite data
- Multi-temporal Fractional Snow Covered area over Scandinavia from Optical satellite data
- Multi-temporal Fractional Snow Covered Area over Scandinavia from Multi-Sensor (optical and radar) satellite data
- Daily Wet Snow Area over Scandinavia from Radar data
- Multi-temporal Wet Snow Area over the Alps from Radar data (new service installed within the EU FP7 project SEN3APP)
The following snow products were provided for demonstration purposes for the melting season (March - June) 2014 (rigorous validation and testing activities ongoing):
- Snow Skin Temperature over southern Norway from Optical satellite data
- Snow Surface Wetness over southern Norway from Optical satellite data
